Redefining Winning

Since I felt this connection to the Miami Dolphins, a sort of parallel to our family’s endeavors as creatives, I had to dig deeper into this win. -Jose Miguel Vasquez

Redefining Winning

When the Miami Dolphins came to Atlanta to face off with the Atlanta Falcons, we had a chance to go see them play. Quite frankly, I was prepared to see them lose and lose badly. My family and I suffer through the reality the Dolphins now face:

Their season is basically over; while more changes loom on the horizon, it all feels like necessary shifts.

Regardless of the current inevitable overhaul, something happened on October 26th that can only be labeled as a “miracle.”

Ways to Win

"...I heard cheers from the many Dolphin fans that showed up to this game-so many that if felt like I was dreaming." 🙌

“How did they pull off this win?!”

I can hear the nay sayers and doubters argue with me here: “miracle?! Come on man!”

Yes, I know, certain factors, like, no Michael Penix Jr at QB for the Falcons, were in line to help the Dolphins win, but ultimately our South Florida team showed up in a way we did not expect. The miracle lies in the lessons we learned from this win to apply to our lives right away!

"How did we get to this game?"

Back in June, my wife, Jenny, my kids, my sister and her kids gifted me and my brotherin law with these tickets for us to go as a family unit. This would be our kids’ first professional football game and as the date grew closer we knew it was looking grim for the Phins.

As I sat next to Jenny, my wife, watching this game at Mercedes Stadium, with our three young adult kids, my sister and brother in law sat close by, I realized the offense had elevated their game. The Dolphins defense put up a fight that began from deep within; the desire to win was finally met with poised action to make it happen!

What made this impossible task possible?

Walking back to our car after the unexpected win, I heard cheers from the many Dolphin fans that showed up to this game-so many that if felt like I was dreaming.

The bliss would fade as we drove away, the reality setting in of what bigger issues the Miami Dolphins had to face.

Since I felt this connection to the Miami Dolphins, a sort of parallel to our family’s endeavors as creatives, I had to dig deeper into this win.

I made an intentional effort to listen to Coach Mike McDaniels press conference; here are my 4 major takeaways from the whole of this event:

1. Go back and strengthen fundamentals

  • Study up and practice the basics, with everything bit of faith you can gather. Revisit the step by step process and infuse it with deep intention.

2. Optimize action with a definite desire

  • Avoid going through the motions. Identify doubts, weaknesses, reverse them into positives and check ego at the door.

  • Remember the mission: why we’re in this “game” together, as creatives and artists and for who do we fight to bring them the light.

3. Focus on personal excellence and unity

  • Bring your best ALWAYS and trust your teammate will do the same and more. Rely on each other when your weak and help the other run a better race.

  • Be quick to forgive, guide and LISTEN.

  • Be slow to anger and stop taking things personally!

  • Unity yields the long game win of an everlasting bond

  • Accountability with tough love reveals how to win together more often than not.

4. Debrief together and restore individually

  • Meet often to look at what’s working, what’s not-

  • Individually, spend time in prayer asking God for guidance and courage to be better.

  • Write out an action plan and get to work!

Simply stated...

In short, winning happens more often when we know how to “lose”; mastering the ability to learn, grow and improve in the face of defeat.

So let’s shift momentum and believe in the impossible.
